What Is Hernia Surgery?
A hernia occurs when internal organs, most commonly the intestines, protrude through weak areas of the abdominal wall. It may develop in the groin, around the belly button, or in previously operated areas known as incisional hernias. If left untreated, a hernia may enlarge over time and can lead to emergency conditions such as incarceration or strangulation.
The main goal of hernia surgery is to repair the defect safely and reduce the risk of recurrence as much as possible. Depending on the patient’s age, general health condition, and the type of hernia, either open or laparoscopic hernia repair techniques may be preferred.
